Microsoft MSFT 0.00%↑ Building Codename Athena AI Chip on TSMC's 5nm Node. Extreme Tech reports (with some paywalled information from The Information) that Microsoft is building its own AI chip, costing almost $100 million, but saving about the same amount. Microsoft making in-house silicon isn’t too much of a surprise (to me), and really fits nicely into a much bigger strategy for partnering with Open AI, NVIDIA, and other Azure-related projects.
One such partnership Microsoft is expanding is a collaboration with Epic, and integration of OpenAI services. The long-standing partnership pairs Epic electronic health record software with an array of generative AI-powered solutions.
D-Wave Quantum QBTS 0.00%↑ released a research paper showing the performance of its 5,000 qubit advantage quantum computer is significantly faster than classical compute on 3D spin glass optimization problems, an intractable class of optimization problems. D-Wave expects its Advantage2 quantum computer (launched just last year) to feature over 7,000 qubits, 20-way connectivity, and higher coherence to solve even larger and more complex problems.
Cyxtera $CYXT looking for a buyer again? Bloomberg had reported that the company reportedly exploring a sale as it seeks to reduce debt load. In hopes of avoiding bankruptcy Cyxtera may look at a potential sale and a possible capital raise.
RFP for the future NERSC-10 DOE Supercomputer : 10x performance of the existing 93.8 petaflops HPE Cray system and within a 20MW power envelope. Cool! I would root for a SGI system, but HPE acquired both them and Cray. The NERSC (National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center) Berkeley Lab will likely see bids from HPE and NVIDIA, as well as potential proposals from the big cloud players such as Microsoft, Amazon, or Google. I am really fascinated by these #HPC systems, and can’t wait to see what will be built.
