Weekly Edition of curated news about Digital Infrastructure
I’ve always really liked the Equinix EQIX 0.00 Blueprints resource and now it looks like they will have a unique and exciting category to add to the mix - with Quantum Computing. Quantum Compute as a Service company OQC (Oxford Quantum Circuit) is making its service available globally to businesses in the Equinix TY11 Tokyo IBX data center. Quantum computing is truly a paradigm shift, and the partnership between Equinix and OQC to foster the technology is explained as: Quantum Computing + colocation + Interconnection = transformation. To take a deep dive into understanding Quantum Computing, check out Quantum Country here.
Ascenty, a Digital Realty DLR 0.00 and Brookfield Infrastructure Partners owned data center company in Latin America, announced it has secured over $1 billion in financing. The funding was achieved via a $825 million offshore Term Loan Facility and a debenture issue in the local capital market. Ascenty said the financing lengthened the company's debt term and will add cash to fund expansion activities in Brazil.
LEO satellite communications company OneWeb says it has partnered with AWS Europe to explore providing cloud-based connectivity and the delivery of innovative services to customers. OneWeb says its ambition is to provide a fully integrated satellite constellation management solution as a service to the public and satellite community. The partnership will focus on Space Data Analytics, virtualization of mission operations, user terminals and edge integration, and business continuity. On March 9th OneWeb successfully deployed 40 satellites launched by SpaceX from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
Microsoft MSFT 0.00 switches cooling systems for future data centers in its Goodyear, Arizona campus. The company will move from water-cooled to air-cooled solutions, as the city is currently unable to handle more wastewater and is unable to make the site’s water potable.
Seeking Alpha has a really interesting (and in-depth) article about the Tower business and American Tower AMT 0.00 . That article was followed-up by this one, that also does a nice job diving into the financial health of the company and growth opportunities.
Intelsat. Not a news story here - just wanted to say I went down the rabbit hole this past week exploring their site and product offerings. In terms of how I plan on defining Digital Infrastructure in a future post, I think their unified network vision has (nicely) framed the network category for me - with Satellite and Terrestrial layers. And do they ever have a portfolio of assets. There is also an extensive library of use cases in their blog.
Bonus map items:
I think Quantum Computing is really fascinating. Check out this Quantum Zeitigeist interactive map of Quantum Computing Companies from around the globe.
Intelsat Fleet map. Incredible.
