Curated news about Digital Infrastructure: Oxide, KKR, Atom Computing, Google, Vertiv, and more
Weekly Edition of curated news about Digital Infrastructure
[Link] San Francisco-based startup Oxide announced the general availability of their commercial cloud computer, along with a $44 million round of financing.
[Link] KKR is close to investing $400 million in subsea cable firm OMS. KKR is a pretty interesting private equity company that I watch regularly. This deal, valued around $1 billion would give OMS capital to continue expansion plans.
[Link] AI software company Rhizome raises $2.5 million for grid resiliency. Rhizome, a climate resilience planning platform for the power grid, announced its official launch, initial institutional capital raise of $2.5 million, and partnership with Seattle City Light and Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO).
[Link] Quantum startup Atom Computing first to exceed 1,000 qubits. The California startup announced it has created a 1,225-site atomic array, currently populated with 1,180 qubits, in its next-generation quantum computing platform. The company explains their approach to quantum computing as “using nuclear spin qubits formed from arrays of optically-trapped neutral atoms. We cool, trap, and control our qubits wirelessly using lasers.”
[Link] Google TPU v5e AI Chip Debuts. Google has released its TPU v5e AI chip, which is the company's first AI chip being mainstreamed with a suite of software and tools for large-scale orchestration of AI workloads in virtual environments.
[Link] Vertiv opens an Ohio Customer Experience Center, featuring a microgrid power solution. I thought this was pretty interesting - for the microgrid solution. The proof-of-concept on display, according to Vertiv, will feature a 1.0 megawatt microgrid that includes a 1.0 MW AC Solar PV (photovoltaic) array, 400 kW Hydrogen Fuel Cell, 1.0 MW Vertiv DynaFlex Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and Vertiv’s Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system, lithium-ion battery, system controls, and other critical components.
[Link]. A side interest/hobby/obsession of mine is crypto. I consume waaaay too much content on X and YouTube and incorrectly think I know what I’m doing. The intersection of Digital Infrastructure and blockchain is of particular interest. I just wanted to highlight my primary source of alpha for the crypto industry, CryptoBanter, and the amazing substack Ran’s Show Notes. Ran Neuner is incredible, and the show notes substack is a regular, generous gift of knowledge that his research team cultivates.
